Brief Historical Review

Early writings note that from the 16th century on, Banderas Bay was a fertile land of incredible beauty, a key place for stopovers and restocking of merchant and pirate ships. Since then the hospitality and kindness of its inhabitants has been recognized.

In the 19th century the place was known as “Las Peñas” turning into an important loading and unloading port for staples and ore from the mining towns of Cuale and San Sebastián del Oeste. By the end of 1851 the Sánchez-Torres family established in the area, they dedicated themselves to farming and providing the mines with salt, both strong economic activities then. Las Peñas was already a popular place of rest and recreation.

By 1880 there were 1500 inhabitants. Five years later, on July 14, 1885, the port was open to the traffic of domestic and international ships and it received the official name of Puerto Las Peñas. On May 31, 1918 the port was named a municipality and its name changed to Puerto Vallarta, to honor the memory of Ignacio L. Vallarta, lawyer and former governor of the State of Jalisco.

By 1930 more national and foreign tourists, lured by the local peacefulness and exuberant natural beauty started to visit the port more frequently. Word of mouth carried on and more new tourists arrived, some bought property. In 1931 the first plane landed in the area and the local life took an unsuspected twist.

In 1951 Puerto Vallarta presents itself to the world during the celebration of its first century. By 1963 the filming of the movie “The Night of the Iguana” greatly contributed to this destination’s promotion worldwide. Thousands of international visitors suddenly arrived. Paved roads and hotels were built. Agriculture as the main source of living was displaced by tourism.

Population grew from 12,500 to more than 350,000 today. A great number of foreigners now live in Puerto Vallarta, most of them from the United States. Many of them actively participate in community life. Thanks to many of them this destination continues to rise above borders consolidating its presence as a first class world tourism destination. Puerto Vallarta currently greets the arrival of flights of the most important airlines from the United States, Canada and Europe. By sea, cruise ships bring thousands of tourists a week. By land, Vallarta is connected by safe and wide roads and highways that from Guadalajara, Tepic and Manzanillo. The present launching of the project Riviera Nayarit has brought about intense work enlarging a new highway linking the whole coast from San Blas to La Cruz de Huanacaxtle.

Puerto Vallarta is surrounded by impressive natural beauty, sea, mountain, rivers, jungle and much more that it shares with other towns that by now are tourist destinations on their own and with their own attractions, becoming new poles of investment in Banderas Bay, some of them to the south: Boca de Tomatlán, Las Juntas y Los Veranos, El Tuito.
